While the Western media is paranoid about Israel’s losing its second Muslim ally, Egypt after Turkey last year – it’s ignoring the anti-government protests against the secular government in Muslim-majority Albania. So far three protesters have been killed in Tirana by the police.
Both the Opposition led by Socialist Edi Rama, Mayor of Tirana, and the ruling party led by Prime Minister Sali Berisha have called for mass demonstrations to show their political power.
“We shall continue our struggle in a determined way, because the way out is clear — either a free Albania for all, or keep the people subdued under the boot of barbaric power,” Rama said at the funeral for one the dead protesters.
European Union officials worried about the ‘people revolution’ in otherwise the first Atheist state of the world – has called both sides to maintain calm in the country if they want to see their country joining the EU.
Albania, the only Muslim-majority country in Europe – is also a victim of western greed for oil and gas. The Texas-based Sky Petroleum has just announced the dicovery of oil fields in Albania. The company holds lease over one million acres (20% of country’s landmass).
Albania was the third Muslim-majority country after Turkey and Iran, which recognized Israel in 1949. In 2009, American Jewish film-maker, Norman H. Gershman, honored Albanian Muslims in the movie ‘God’s House’ for saving 2,000 European Jews from Nazis while risking their own lives.
Berisha and several of his cabinet ministers are known for corruption which goes back to his 1992-1997 regime during which the country faced the (ponzi) schemes that cost Albanians close to a billion euros in lifetime savings.
On Jan. 14, 2011 – Albanian Minister of Economy and Trade Ilir Meta was forced to resign after a popular TV channel broadcast footage that purportedly showed him trying to influence a government tender. Meta became a minister of economy last year, replacing Dritan Prifti, who was himself caught up in a corruption scandal at the time.
The 3.5 million Albanian don’t have equivalent of Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood – to scare the hell out of the US and Israel, though.
