The Senate approval of Ben Obama’s Ambassadorial nominees for three Muslim-majority countries, Turkey, Syria and Azerbaijan had been put on hold by the pro-Israel Lobby Senators. Using the Congressional recess – Ben Obama has approved his three nominees plus Norman Eisen, a Jewish American as Ambassador to the Czech Republic.
Under US Constitution, the President can make appointments of new members of his administration without the pre-approval of the Senate when it’s at recess. However, these appointments are considered legal until the next session of the Senate. In this case it would be December 2011.
The Senate confirmation of Robert Stephen Ford as US Ambassador to Damascus was put on hold for several months under Israel Lobby (AIPAC) pressure. Since 2005, US did not have an Ambassador in Syria. The last was withdrawn by Duby Bush as a political pressure on Syrian government in the aftermath of assassination of former Lebanes prime minister Rafik Hariri by Israeli Mossad agents. The US, Israel and France blamed Syria for the death of Rafik Hariri. Later they cleared Syria of the crime and now they are blaming Hizbullah, the only Arab militia which defeated Israel in 2006. Ben Obama is hoping that with the diplomatic relation reinstated, the Ba’athist government in Damascus will change its anti-Israel policy and eventually distance itself from Tehran.
The reaction to Robert Ford’s confirmation irritated ‘Israel-Firster’, the incoming Cuban-born Chairperson of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. “Making undeserved concessions to Syria tells the regime in Damascus that it can continue to pursue its dangerous agenda and not face any consequences from the US…. That is the wrong message to be sending to a regime which continues to harm and threaten US interests and those of such critical allies as Israel,” she said.
